Mental Model:

Hell Yeah or No

Derek Sivers is a fascinating guy who has managed to construct his life centered around this one simple metric for decision-making:

When deciding whether or not to do something, if it’s not a “Hell Yeah!”, then it’s a “No”.

I really like it because when you frame decision-making that way, I’m sure many of us would say no to a lot more stuff and instead focus on things that really excite us.

Because the fact is, if we say “yes” to every opportunity that comes our way, we don’t have the capacity to then pursue the things which are a “hell yeah” because our plates are already full…

Hack you should try:

The Frustration List

I came across this really cool life hack courtesy of Ben Meer this week.

Here’s how it goes.

Okay, so you know those little things about your life and your surroundings that frustrate you and take up your valuable time? For example, having to move your phone charger from your bedside table to your desk when you want to work. Or a flickering lightbulb that always irritates you? Or even a wobbly chair or desk that you notice every time you use it?

The frustration list is essentially a three-step system to address those little irritants directly.

  1. Whenever you experience one of those little ‘frustrations’, simply jot it down on a piece of paper or on your phone.

  2. Set aside 30-60 minutes during the first week of every month to address all of them at once.

  3. Repeat every month.

Sounds pretty obvious and unnecessary to develop a conscious system about them, we know. But the truth is, in the hustle of day-to-day as we move from one task to the next, more often than not, we tend to simply accept these irritants and little inefficiencies as opposed to addressing them directly so they can be removed from our lives.

This system helps target exactly that.

Try it out and let me know you go.
