Podcast you should listen to:
Gavin Rubinstein x Jarryd Rubinstein
Most people have heard of Gavin Rubinstein (the Eastern Suburbs real estate agent on Luxe Listings Sydney), but who you probably don’t know much about is Gavin’s older brother, Jarryd.
Jarryd has led an incredibly eventful life, especially for a guy still in his 30s.
After graduating with a Business degree from UTS, he ditched the corporate path to join the Israeli army where he served for a number of years, testing his mind and his body to the absolute limit. He then worked in commodities trading all over the world and has also been involved in various other industries.
This podcast opened my eyes to the power of going down an unorthodox route. If you’re feeling pressured to follow your peers or your friends down certain avenues career-wise, then listen to this pod. It’ll give you a lot to think about.
Interesting Phenomenon:
The 5 Blue Zones
I actually wrote an article about this a year ago, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently.
The Blue Zones are the 5 locations in the world with the highest life expectancies, the highest number of centenarians (people over 100 years of age), as well as the lowest rates of Chronic Diseases.
The 5 Blue Zones are:
Ikaria, Greece
Sardinia, Italy
Okinawa, Japan
Nicoya, Costa Rica
Loma Linda, California, US
After significant research conducted by National Geographic, these were the most common factors that contributed to overall health and longevity in these places:
Consuming a diet rich with whole-foods
Consuming alcohol only in moderation
Integrating exercise into everyday life (walking, household chores, etc.)
Prioritising 7-8 hours of sleep (and taking naps when possible)
Having a clear life purpose and searching for deeper meaning
Getting involved in the community and maintaining a healthy social network with friends and family
Something for us all to think about…
Framework:
The Pratfall Effect
The Pratfall Effect is a psychological phenomenon which suggests that people distance themselves from those who appear ‘perfect’ or ‘flawless’.
Interestingly, research shows that we tend to be significantly more inclined to like someone who is competent, yet appears to have a minor flaw, makes a little mistake (like getting tongue-tied, for instance), etc.
So what?
Well, it reinforces the idea that it’s okay to be human. People find it almost intimidating if you attempt to come across as if you possess no flaws in any regard whatsoever.
Sometimes, showing that ‘human element’ can be the missing piece to the puzzle.
That’s not to say that we should be reckless or not strive to do our best in everything we do, not at all. It just highlights that humanising yourself can have a positive impact on your ability to connect with others.
It’s okay to make mistaakes.
Yes, that was intentional :)
Tweet I liked:
Patience, honesty, leadership, consistency, focus.
They aren’t traits, they’re skills.
We stop teaching them to children then we’re surprised adults don’t have them.
If it can be learned, it is a skill.
