Quote, Podcast, Framework, Article, Tweet.
Good morning everyone,
Hope you’re having a great week!
Let’s jump in.

#125 at a Glance:
Quote: Optimise for enthusiasm.
Podcast: Mark Bouris x John Howard.
Framework: 7 reasons why people share content.
Article: BHP’s quiet surrender to the Yuan.
Tweet: The importance of saying ‘no’.
Quote I’ve been thinking about:
“Optimise for enthusiasm. Make as many choices as you can that leave you feeling energetic and interested. Pay attention to when you have the urge to pursue or participate in something and do more of it.”
Podcast I listened to:
Straight Talk #211 - John Howard
Mark Bouris sits down with Australia’s second-longest-serving Prime Minister, John Howard.
An unfiltered conversation about leadership, politics, and the lessons that shaped his life.
From growing up in Earlwood to his time working as a lawyer in London, to his role as Treasurer before PM, this was an awesome discussion.
What struck me most was how thoughtful John was with his syntax and his overall conversational sharpness – at the ripe age of 86.

Framework I’ve been thinking about:
The 7 Reasons Why People Share Content
In the social media game, if someone shares your content with others, that’s a pretty big deal.
It means that an individual has engaged with your post and felt compelled to then distribute that to others either at an individual level (through private message or DM) or to a collective (through stories, reposts, etc).
From the creator’s perspective, shares are absolutely golden.
A share:
Is free exposure to potential new followers via a trusted source
Positively reinforces your target audience to the algorithm
Increases the organic growth of your post
Strongly indicates that your content is resonating with the right people
Given the utility of shares in the creator economy, the question then becomes: how to make content that compels people to share?
Well, according to Shaan Puri, it’s all about triggering certain emotions.
According to his framework, there are only 7 emotions that encourage someone to share a piece of content:
LOL (Made me laugh)
OHH (I learned something)
WOW (That’s amazing/impressive)
AWW (That’s so cute)
YAY (That’s great news!)
WTF (That makes me mad/shocked/upset)
FINALLY (Finally someone said it)
If I think about myself and the occasions when I have shared content with friends/family, this framework absolutely holds true.
Even when it comes to this newsletter, it’s usually OHH or WOW.
A very useful framework and something for those of us playing the social media game to keep in mind…

Article I read:
The Iron-Dollar Crack: BHP’s Quiet Surrender to the Yuan
Came across this brilliant article on LinkedIn written by none other than Money of Mine’s Travis Ricciardo.
Here’s the news:
From the fourth quarter of 2025, BHP, the world’s biggest miner, will settle 30% of its iron ore sales to China in Chinese Yuan instead of US dollars.
Here’s why it matters:
15 years ago, the CEO of BHP at the time, Marius Kloppers, struck a deal that effectively anchored the world’s largest iron ore exchange in the US dollar system.
This time, the wheel turns the other way. By accepting settlement in Chinese Yuan, BHP has given ground on both price and currency. The world’s largest miner just helped Beijing take a step toward an RMB-priced commodity system.
Economically, the logic is clear. China is the buyer, and it wants to pay in its own currency. Politically, it is combustible.
“Australia earns half its export income from China but relies on the United States for defence. Every yuan-settled shipment tightens that contradiction.”
Clocking up over 1,100 reactions less than 24 hours after being published, mining circles got right behind this one…

The Importance of Saying ‘No’
You underestimate the amount of times you need to say ‘no’ to build something great.
