#118 – Trajectory & Investing
Quote, Podcast, Mental Model, Article, Tweet.
Good morning from Athens!
Ahhhhhh it is so good to be back here.
What a place. What a city. What a country.
Going to be over here in Europe for a total of three weeks.
Arrived in Athens last Saturday, heading to Kos tomorrow, and then hopping over to Rhodes.
After that, flying to Florence for a very special wedding in Tuscany.
Absolutely stoked to be here and loving every minute.
Grateful for the opportunity to reset and refresh after what has been a huge year thus far.
Lots of stuff happening, including a project that I’ve been working on for the last few months which I’m super excited to share with you all. More to come very soon.
Alright, let’s jump in.

Mental Model: Focus On Your Trajectory.
Article: Investing Rules of Thumb.

Quote I’ve been thinking about:
“I can only make sense of my unaccountable good fortune by assuming that it means I am under special obligation to make good use of it.”
Definitely feeling this one while I’ve been over here!
Podcast I listened to:
The High Performance Podcast E328: Red Bull F1 Mechanic Calum Nicholas
Calum Nicholas is a key figure in the world of Formula 1, working as a senior mechanic for Red Bull Racing. With years of experience in the sport, he’s been at the heart of some of the most intense moments in recent F1 history, playing a crucial role in shaping championship-winning moments.
In this episode, Jake Humphrey talks with Calum about what makes Max Verstappen such a rare talent and how Red Bull recognised his potential long before he became a world champion. Calum shares what it’s like working with Max, the dedication he brings to his craft, and the culture within Red Bull that keeps them at the top.
He also takes a deep dive into the unforgettable 2021 season, reflecting on the pressures, the mental battles, and the rollercoaster ride that led to Red Bull reclaiming the title. From rebuilding behind the scenes to dealing with self-doubt, Calum gives a rare glimpse into the realities of competing at the highest level.
Beyond the racing world, Calum touches on diversity in motorsport, the legacy of Lewis Hamilton, and offers valuable advice for anyone dreaming of a career in F1, no matter their background.

Mental Model I’ve been thinking about:
Focus On Your Trajectory
Really powerful mental model courtesy of James Clear:
"Running one mile has more in common with running a marathon than sitting at home.
Investing $100 has more in common with being a millionaire than being broke.
Writing one sentence has more in common with writing a book than never writing one.
It always feels small in the beginning and the big goals seem far away. It's easy to talk yourself out of the early attempts because they feel kind of meaningless.
But every race starts with one step. Every fortune starts with a small deposit. Every book begins as one sentence.
The real question is not "What is my current position?" but rather, "What is my current trajectory?" Doing nothing builds nothing. Put yourself on the path to something better. Start small, but make sure you start."
Article I read:
Investing Rules of Thumb by Trader Ferg
‘Trader Ferg’ is a full-time stock trader with a habit of hanging out in hated corners of the market that are notoriously "uninvestable".
This piece that he wrote last month on his ‘rules of thumb’ when it comes to investing I found to be extremely valuable for anyone looking for a more practical way to navigate listed equities.
TLDR: do the work, minimise unknown risk, be patient, remember you only win big by being a contrarian.
You have to be willing to stand out in the cold by yourself and wait for time to prove you right.

The Parenting Paradox
One of the toughest things about being a Father is when you realize you’re raising the ones you can’t live without, to live without you.
