Quote, Podcast, Framework, Hack, Tweet.

Good morning everyone,

Hope you’re having a great week!

Let’s jump in.

#099 at a Glance:

  • Quote: The definition of arrogance.

  • Podcast: 15 minutes with Janine Allis.

  • Framework: The 2-step process for exceptional results.

  • Hack: Do this next time you’re running late.

  • Tweet: Shopify CEO’s internal memo on AI.

Quote I’ve been thinking about:

“Arrogance is pride mixed with ignorance.”

Dewayne Noel

Podcast I listened to:

AFR’s 15 Minutes with The Boss: Janine Allis

Janine Allis is the Founder of Boost Juice, Chair of Retail Zoo, and former Shark on Shark Tank Australia.

I really enjoyed hearing about the way Janine:

  • Prioritises spending time in the ocean as part of her routine

  • Left her full-time corporate job to start Boost Juice

  • Hires slow and fires fast

  • Never puts people on pedestals

  • Approaches every situation as a student

  • Debunks the notion of ‘imposter syndrome’

Listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Framework I’ve been thinking about:

The 2-Step Process for Exceptional Results

James Clear’s 2-step process for exceptional results:

  1. Spend a little time each day thinking about the highest leverage activity available to you.

  2. Spend a little time each day working on it.

And I’ll follow that up with another quote from James which reinforces the importance of point number two:

"The feeling of progress is one of the best feelings of all. This is true even when progress is small."

Highly recommend subscribing to James Clear’s 3-2-1 Newsletter. Sensational.

Hack I came across:

Do This Next Time You’re Running Late

Brilliant concept from writer Jacob Falkovich on what to do next time you’re running late:

"If you think you’re running 10 minutes late, text to say you’ll be 15 minutes late.

That way the other person gets one disappointment and one pleasant surprise.

Most people do the opposite: they say they’re 5 minutes late when it’s 10 and end up annoying the other and looking like total fools."

A similar approach can also apply to how we respond to mistakes and manage the expectations of others more broadly…

Tweet I liked:

Shopify CEO’s Internal Memo on AI

Some of my favourite excerpts from the memo:

  • “We are entering a time where more entrepreneurs could be created than any other in history.”

  • “Our task here at Shopify is to make our software unquestionably the best canvas on which to develop the best businesses of the future.”

  • “What we have learned so far is that using AI well is a skill that needs to be carefully learned by…using it a lot. It’s just too unlike everything else.”

  • Using AI effectively is now a fundamental expectation of everyone at Shopify.”

  • Learning to prompt and load context is important, and getting peers to provide feedback on how this is going will be valuable.”

  • “Before asking for more headcount and resources, teams must demonstrate why they cannot get what they want done using AI.”

Interesting times ahead…

I also love the way he owned the situation and instead of cowering in the corner, decided to publish it himself once he heard it was being leaked.

Must read.
