Mental Model I’ve been thinking about:
The 80/80 Rule in Relationships
The other day, I was listening to an episode of the AFR’s 15 Minutes with The Boss podcast (love that show by the way), and something one of the guests said really stuck with me.
The guest was Jason Johnson, CEO of executive search and recruitment firm Johnson Partners, and here’s what he said:
“…I read this book about the 80/80 rule in relationships, and that talks about this notion of, rather than relationships being 50/50 where everyone’s looking for equity and balance, just to have radical generosity in what you’re doing… In a family setting, whatever your contribution is, the idea is to do it with an open heart, with generous spirit, and all of that measuring of contribution just washes away, and I think that’s incredibly powerful. That’s where the 80/80 comes in.”
I really love this idea.
Most relationships are viewed as 50/50.
Give and take. Fairness. Equity. Zero sum.
But the 80/80 rule breaks that entirely.
It is predicated on the notion of give for the sake of giving.
Teamwork. Contribution. Love. Positive sum.
Obviously this idea lends itself most conveniently to romantic or family relationships, but if we begin to think more broadly, this can extend to every single type and category of relationship that we have with others, whether professionally or personally.

Hack I’ve been using:
Focus on the NTRs
For those of you who might not know, I recently started a new job as an Intern in the Listed Equities (Small Caps) team at IFM Investors here in Sydney.
I’m about 5 weeks in and absolutely loving it – the team are awesome and the work has been really exciting.
Now, with any new undertaking, there is usually a pretty steep learning curve.
New challenges, new environment, new projects.
It can be a lot to wrap your head around.
Whenever I find myself in a new situation where a lot of the things I’m working on feel foreign and/or challenging, one of the hacks that I always like to come back to is this: Focus on the NTRs.
NTR stands for ‘No Talent Required’.
You see, it’s easy to feel stretched when you’re confronted with gaps in skill or knowledge that you haven’t quite fully developed – especially when you’re the most junior person in your team.
So, one of the easiest things to do is to focus on those little actions, behaviours, and habits that require no talent or skill whatsoever.
I’ll give you some examples:
Showing up early
Work ethic
Effort
Body language
Energy
Attitude
Passion
Being coachable
Doing extra
Preparedness
Listening
Being a good teammate
Following through
Focus
Respect
Consistency
Positivity
Communication
Resilience
I really love this list.
Absolutely zero talent or skill necessary.
