#079 – Qantas & Google Calendar
Quote, Podcast, Video, Hack, Tweet.
Good morning everyone,
Hope you’re having a great week!
Let’s jump in.

#079 at a Glance:
Quote: Your business & your personal life.
Podcast: The book that Qantas never wanted to be published.
Video: Gordon Ramsay x Matthew McConaughey.
Hack: Use Google Calendar.
Tweet: The Power of Good Judgement.
Quote I’ve been thinking about:
“Your business is always going to be a reflection of your personal life in some way, shape, or form.”
Podcast I listened to:
Straight Talk with Mark Bouris #155: Joe Aston
Joe Aston is an influential Australian journalist, widely recognised as the editor and writer behind the Australian Financial Review’s ‘Rear Window’ column for 12 years.
Joe’s latest book, The Chairman’s Lounge: The Inside Story of How Qantas Sold Us Out, has sparked a media storm by casting an important light on what was once one of Australia’s most esteemed organisations.
Mark and Joe dived into:
Joe’s development as a journalist & his time at the AFR
What it’s like working in an endlessly confronting industry
Balancing personal & professional relationships with powerful people in journalism
Qantas’ controversial business strategy during COVID & relationships with politicians
Alan Joyce’s leadership & the role of the Qantas board.
One of my favourite Straight Talk episodes to date. Hands down.
Should be essential listening for all Australians as it speaks to some of the structural flaws within our country’s government/corporate landscape.
Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube.
[Podcast Length: 1 hour 33 minutes]
Video I watched:
Gordon Ramsay x Matthew McConaughey
Two successful guys just reflecting on life and talking about how to make it all work as Dads.
Bit of a more random content piece from me but one that I really enjoyed.
Hack I’ve been using:
Use Google Calendar
For the last 4 years since I left school, I’ve been using physical diaries to manage my schedule and keep track of all of my commitments throughout the week/month/year.
Thought I had productivity all figured out with that system and was a big advocate of the physical diary.
That is until 6 weeks ago when I got back from overseas and decided to try out Google Calendar.
Oh man.
Best thing I’ve ever done for not only my time management, but also my mental clarity and focus.
Cannot believe I wasn’t doing it already.
These are the set colour categories that I’ve been using which have worked really well for me (feel free to customise/adapt as you see fit):
Lavender = Work.
Sage = Side Hustles & Personal Projects.
Basil = Uni.
Peacock = Morning Routine.
Flamingo = Exercise.
Blueberry = Language Learning.
Tangerine = Social.
Graphite = Medical.
Tomato = Church.
Grape = All-day Commitment/Reminder.
Banana = Random/Miscellaneous.
Sounds super basic but for those of you who aren’t doing it already, it’ll change the way you run your life.
Just the sheer convenience of being able to visibly see which buckets your time is flowing into makes it worthwhile.
Honestly couldn’t recommend this more highly.
Tweet I liked:
The Power of Good Judgement
In an age of permissionless leverage, judgement, not work, determines success and failure.
Good judgement is the product of a calm and curious mind, reasoning without motivation and attachment.
Whatever strengthens your ego weakens your judgement, and ultimately, your success.
