#060 at a Glance:
Quote: Climbing the wrong mountain.
Podcast: 15 minutes with Matt Moran.
Video: The importance of being a playmaker
Interesting Phenomenon: Why time flies.
Tweet: How to tell if someone is actually good at their job.
Quote I’ve been thinking about:
“You don’t need to worry about progressing slowly. You need to worry about climbing the wrong mountain.”
Podcast I listened to:
AFR’s 15 Minutes with The Boss: Matt Moran
Matt Moran is a renowned chef and restauranteur who owns some of the most prominent food hotspots in Sydney, from Opera Bar and Aria to North Bondi Fish and Chiswick Woollahra.
With 12 restaurants and over 600 staff, I really enjoyed getting a unique perspective on the entrepreneurial side of hospitality.
In particular, I loved Matt’s take on how to retain great employees:
“You’ve got to give them some sort of ownership – you’ve got to let them be creative. I’ve got 20 or 30 chefs who have been with me for over 15 years – and that’s not just about paying them properly and looking after them, but it’s about giving them a say in what we’re doing, giving them autonomy.
[Podcast Length: 18 minutes]
Video I watched:
The Importance of Being a Playmaker
Great 5-minute video from Patrick Bet-David recently on the importance of taking charge in every situation; what he calls being a “Playmaker”.
In the face of any obstacle or in the midst of any worthwhile pursuit, we face two choices:
We can be passive – waiting for people to overcome challenges for us, delaying action until the “perfect moment"; OR
We can be proactive – seeking opportunity through sheer determination and persistence.
PBD illustrates the point using some sporting examples with his eldest son, Dylan, but draws on the parallels to the world of business and entrepreneurship.
Give it watch.
Very powerful if, and only if, acted upon.
Interesting Phenomenon I came across:
Why Time Flies
Came across this awesome visual demonstration of why time flies over the course of our lives:
Click the link, maximise the screen, scroll down, and experience the full effects of the words as they appear.
Basically, the idea is that as we age, each successive year represents a diminishing fraction of our entire lifespan. This phenomenon contributes to the perception that time accelerates as we grow older, making each year feel increasingly fleeting and insubstantial in the broader scope of our lives.
Wild.

Tweet I liked:
You can tell how good someone is at their job by the number of things they track, how they make the business more money, and their ability to change them.
